Paris, Je t’aime! A Première Partie…

La Perfection, Son Nom est Françoise

Sitting here in snow swept Toronto, under mounds of books and looming midterms, my imagination is desperately taking flights of fancy. And where should it land, but  none other than the City of Lights, of course! Paris to me, is like slipping into a second skin; although my French is atrocious, I am home again. A psychic once told me that I would adore Paris as I was supposedly a 15th Century French singer in my previous birth. Having already walked its cobblestone streets, I admit to feeling a deep affinity to Paris and I shall endeavor to  return again and again. In this lifetime, I was not blessed with a sultry voice. So who better to represent the best of the Parisian chanteuses than my absolute favorite, Francoise Hardy.

This lithe and gorgeous lady has crooned her way into my French day dreams. Hearing her songs make me long for sunsets by the seine. A fellow Capricorn, Francoise was fiercely independent and made an in indelible mark on the Yeah Yeah scene. She could h0ld her own against Jane Birkin and Brigitte Bardot with her dusky voice and looks to match. As a style icon she is unrivaled. She was daring but always classy, a tomboy with feline flair; as an homage, I’ve cut my hair to resemble her effortless side swept do.

Upon my second French visit, I scoured the arrondissement’s for records, vintage clothes and yummy crepes. One afternoon, as I wandered through the Latin Quarter I came across what I can only describe as the Honest Ed’s of second hand French paraphernalia; super ghetts, but the prices were right. The tape collection was unfathomable; I wish I had taken pictures! Next to VHS cassettes of dubbed Schwarzenegger and Stallone films was a cramped vinyl section. Suddenly, a warm sensation tickled the back of my neck and I knew it; something fantastic was just waiting to be found. With nimble fingers I flicked away tawdry and unloved old wax, strategically maneuvering myself amongst the other pickers and obvious hoarders. ‘H’. As I came upon this letter, my excitement was palpable; I went 4 records in when I came upon it. For only 3 Euros staring me in the face was a double vinyl album, Francoise Hardy Nouvelle Edition. Incredible! It was a greatest hits comp, but who cares, it was Francoise! I paid the garcon and nearly skipped down the Boulevard Saint-Michel.

You can’t imagine how excited I was to hear Francoise’s Le Temps de L’amour in the trailer for Wes Anderson’s upcoming opus, Moonlight Kingdom. One of my favorite American auteurs who has impeccable taste.

Stay tuned, Happy Howlers, for more music, photos and memories from my most recent visit to Paris
